For its Best Actor 2017 Oscar predictions, IndieWire has named Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Joel Edgerton (Loving), Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), and Denzel Washington (Fences) as frontrunners. Casey Affleck is a controversial choice. However, his performance in Manchester is a critic favorite, as is the film in whole. Loving is receiving relatively less stellar reviews, but its two leads are getting solid reviews. The same holds true for Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge, who succeeds in master crafting his role and carrying the film. La La Land just may be this year’s critic favorite. Both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone could well positioned to ride that tide to Oscar wins. Finally, there’s Washington, who both acted in and directed Fences. It’s an important film that stays maybe too close to the source material. However, Washington’s win would be a triumph in light of the #OscarsSoWhite disappointment.
Contenders and Long Shots
Tom Hanks (Sully) and Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) were listed as possible contenders.
